As of 1 March 2011, Solveig Sandal Johnsen started working as a librarian at the Library of Social Sciences where she has been offered a one-year position to cover Gitte Kolstrup. The joint library covers the academic fields of Law, Economics, Psychology and Political Science at Aarhus University.
Responsible for the academic field of Law
The collections for the four main academic fields are located in two separate buildings. The collections for Psychology are located in the Nobel Park, and the collections for Law, Economics and Political Sciences can be found in one joint library at Bartholins Allé.
– The field of law is my overall responsibility, which I share with a colleague. Of course, we help each other across the different academic fields, but law is my personal area of expertise. This is also the reason why I’m the one in charge of helping law students with their enquiries at the library, says Solveig.
In addition, Solveig is responsible for the eight student assistants employed at the library. This means that she spends a lot of her time delegating assignments to the student assistants and preparing duty rosters.
Libraries should be an integral part of student environment
Apart from her various day-to-day responsibilities, Solveig is a member of the taskforces at the Library of Social Sciences and the ASB Library. The taskforces work across the different faculty libraries to make the libraries an integral part of the academic student environment.
The taskforces offer students both practical and academic tools throughout their study period, and teaching is one of the priorities:
– Apart from teaching activities, there’s always a new project in the pipeline. During the spring semester, we’ll be launching a series of learning projects on our website, with short video clips intended as student guides, Solveig explains.
Former employee at ASB Library
Solveig holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Aalborg (Denmark). Having completed her studies in 2007, she started working at the ASB Library. After six months, she decided to move with her husband to Chicago where he had been offered a position as a postdoctoral scholar.
– I was pleased with my job at the ASB Library, and that’s also why it’s nice to be able to stay in touch with my former colleagues through my job at the Library of Social Sciences, Solveig concludes.
